In Brief(s) (hahaha!)(I’m a child)

Gosh, sorry it’s been so long since my last post. Here a summary of what’s been going on.

1. I gave wordsearches to my students. They LOVED them. Also, so did the teachers. I guess when you don’t do stuff like that when you are a kid, you don’t think of them as childish. Started to teach sudoku to JSS 3, which was difficult, but they are getting the hang of it.

2. Andy, Shaun and I went down to Accra on the 20th because Andy had to start his Close of Service stuff the following Monday. On the way, our bus broke down two times and people got out and pushed, which was impressive because this bus was huge. The delay was okay though, because I bought some redred (fried plantains and beans) and was happy.

3. I ate tons of food in Accra, the best being the most delicious banku IN THE WORLD. I’ve gushed about this banku probably too much already…but… IT’S SO AMAZING. Recap – banku is fermented corn dough that comes in a ball (like fufu and kenkey). THIS banku is especially awesome because you get it with ginger tilapia and vegetables and really good pepe. Ahhhhh I love Ghanaian food. I’m going to be in Accra for Christmas by myself (sad), but I’m totally going to eat this banku and be the happiest American in Accra. We also ate doughnuts and lots of plantain chips. Food!  Moving on!

4. Actually, still on food, we went to the Ambassador’s house for Thanksgiving. It was nice and the food was really good. I ate four pieces of pie. Not exaggerating. I talked to the Amb for a couple minutes about his very recently born baby girl. They named her Campbell, after their good friend who is a famous geologist/gemologist (he helped discover tanzanite!?) and was murdered last year in Kenya. What! Dramatic name, right? So we drank (one of the dudes at the bar started talking to me and when I told him I stay in Bolga, he got excited because he was from Navrongo, also in the UE, and then told me that I should come straight to him for my drinks and not wait in line. Oh, Sylvester!) and mingled and got fat and then went home.

5. Andy and I went to the airport on the night of the 26th and hung out there until he could check in for his flight at 01:00. We played Scrabble and I slept and we tried to get tea but the either very bored or very irritated woman at the cafe place stared at us like a smug cow and told us that hot drinks were finished. How can a cafe be out of hot drinks? Even hot tea, which only requires hot water? Who knows. GHANA. But it wasn’t a big deal. He left to go through security around 03:30. It was sad and I cried. But not too much.

So, that’s that. I know it’s not really descriptive, but that’s because I don’t really do much in Accra beyond go to the PC office and go to grocery stores and places to eat. It’s too expensive to do much else. Oh well! Things on the radar include…

- GRE on 27 December. I’m basically a fractions and exponents MASTER now, so I’m bound to totes show this test whose boss (me). The fact that I know about as much math as a competent seventh grader doesn’t get me down.

- BEST FRIENDS DO GHANA 2010-11 TRIP OF A LIFETIME EXTRAVAGANZA begins 28 December when Christopher flies in. We’re going to go to Cape Coast and then Kakum National Park and then a monastery and then who knows! It’ll be slammin’, just you wait.

- Starting to do my glass beads project at school! My grant got approved!

- Giving my kids mazes to do! And maybe teaching them how to play Heads Up, Seven Up AKA best school game in da world!.

- Also going to start doing calabash (dried gourd) art with some of them.

- Is it too early to get pumped about going home in March? Nope. Andy got a smart phone there and it sounds scary. But I guess all of you fine fine Americans have smart phones now, so maybe I should just stop talking.

- BEST BANKU IN THE WORLD OMG CHRISTMAS! :)
