Bad News………..

On Tuesday, I got a call from Francis. He told me that the headmaster of my school, Mr. Francis Andiiba, had just passed away. It shocked everyone, including me. As far as everyone knew, he was healthy, but while he was in Tamale at a workshop, he fell sick and died. This is awful news – he was a very, very nice man (the last time I saw him was when he gave me a ride into town), was on very good terms with all the staff and genuinely cared about our school. Now, I’m not sure what will happen. I wouldn’t be surprised if it takes GES (Ghana Education Service) a long time to appoint a new headmaster and if we get a very late start to the term. It’s just a really bad situation all around. I guess I’ll see what is happening when I return to school after Accra…

Good News………

- Would you believe it, we have another cat. How it happened: back when we got Oswald, we wanted another one so that he would have someone to play with. We asked the man who got Oswald for us (Mr. Peter), if he could look for another boy kitten and he said sure. After about a week, he said that he could only find females and we said okay, no problem, don’t worry about it. Oswald was getting a lot more comfortable at home and we could leave him outside no problem when we were gone. But then yesterday, Job, who lives with the landlord, was like “Oh, Tiyumba, Mr. Peter has brought your cat.” Mr. Peter never forgets, apparently. So now we have Julius, a small orange (heh) kitten with blue eyes, a little smaller than Oswald but fluffier. Something is wrong with his eyes (feline conjunctivitis?), which makes him look kind of ugly, which made us lovingly nickname him Retch. Currently Oswald is sort of getting used to him and starting to play with him, instead of just hissing at him and acting all bitter like. We decided that having kittens is way better than TV.

- Two days ago, Peggy and I got the go-ahead to revise the Dawn of Cooking, the PC Ghana cookbook! Woo! This will be preeeeetty exciting.

- Yesterday when Andy made tea for me, he put in a little vanilla extract – amazing! This morning I tried maple. As maple is the worlds most deliciously flavourful flavour, I died of happiness. I suggest you try.

- Remember how I said that Issah was coming to visit us? Well he did. We cleaned the house, ate ramen noodles and played cards. He also brought letters for Andy and me. Mine had an AMAZING and HEARTWARMING picture, which I will show you here:

I love that a 14-year-old boy drew me this.

- Peggy came over for dinner last night and brought the apple strudel cake that she made. We ate stir fry, played Scrabble and ate the cake. It was delicious. In other Scrabble news, Andy and I are in the middle of our second Scrabble marathon (26.2 games with one continuous score). Last time I won (7070 points) but so far this time he’s winning. Hmmm!

- I’m currently reading As I Lay Dying for the second time since high school. Its so so so good. Really enjoying it.

- Going to Accra tomorrow! Our bus supposedly leaves at 06:30. We’ll see!
