I have three things on my “to blog about” list today.
1. I’m reading this really good book that you should probably definitely read too. It’s called Hustling Is Not Stealing and it’s by John M. Chernoff. Basically, its a collection of a young Ghanaian woman’s stories. The author tape-recorded her talking and then wrote it out. It’s a perfect example of Ghanaian English. I can’t imagine a better one. Also, there’s a really interesting introduction to Ghanaian culture etc. I really think you should read it. Plus, check out the cool cover! – http://www.amazon.com/Hustling-Not-Stealing-Stories-African/dp/0226103528
2. Did you know the World Cup started? It did. Watching matches with Ghanaian women is a funny experience. When the nBlack Stars were playing Autralia a few days ago, I watched the game with Fataiya, Hadijatu, Beatrice, Beatrice’s two sisters, Portia, Ruth and a few female students. And God. Because, to these women, God is highly interested in the outcome of this game. They were praying something serious during the game. Example: “Oh Lord Jesus. You say you will not make your children to be losers so be with us today. Help us to be victorious!” Later on, when they thought the ref was being biased they were like “Oh-oh! Ah bah! He is against Ghanaians. He is biased (pronounced by – assed)! But God is not biased.” And then they prayed some more. I didn’t want to say that petitioning divine help would be asking God to be biased. Whatever. Then when Ghana scored a goal there was screaming and running around the room and falling on the floor and the like. And I laughed.
3. Sorry if anyone has tried to call me in the last ten days. There was a mega storm Wednesday of last week – rain was coming in my house SERIOUS! the only nonwet place i could sleep was curled up on the end of my bed – and Tigo went down. And stayed down. And stayed down. I was sad. So sorry if you attempted to contact me. I did get another sim card -if you want that number, just let me know and I’ll get it to you.
ETC….
- Friday is turning into my come to Bolga day. Today all the kids are working instead of having school. They’re planting hedes. Okay.
- I made this recipe the other day – http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Barley-Primavera/Detail.aspx. IT IS DELICIOUS. Esp if you eat it cold inside green pepper scoops. The barley came from America.
- Clay is still going really well. We’re working on making heads. I feel like my students are more individually creative when working with clay. Like, their products are more unique. I wonder if it’s because there isn’t a standard, “this is what a X looks like” for clay objects the same way that there is for drawn objects. If that makes sense. It makes me happy.
Okay, on to shop!

Hi Katharyn!
We enjoyed watching the US vs Ghana game. The Ghanaian goalie was super! I’ll try to find somewhere online where I can listen to or watch some of the game on Friday. Go Black Stars!
